Triassic Ichthyosauria: With Special Reference to the American Forms (Classic Reprint) Paperback – Febru by John C. Merriam (Author)Author: John C. Merriam. Cynibospondylusf grandis (Merriam), Ibid.
This species is the best known of the American Triassic ichthyosaurs, being represented by many individuals, which collectively exhibit the greater part of the skeletal structure. It occurs in the exposures of Middle Triassic limestones in the West Humboldt Range of Author: John Campbell Merriam.
Merriam's study of the Ichthyosaurs, especially the Triassic forms of North America. he begins the work with a bibliography of works on the subject and supplements that list throughout the work. He devotes sections of the work to their worldwide geologic and geographic distribution, general skeletal structure, origin, evolution, variation in species, and classification and systematic descriptions.

It is therefore the largest known mixosaurid and one of the largest Triassic ichthyosaurs. The general text-book picture of mixosaurs as small, rather unspecialized, primitive ichthyosaurs is. This chapter discusses the marine reptiles and Mesozoic biochronology.
Marine reptiles of the Mesozoic were the Placodontia, Nothosauria, Mosasauria, Thallatosauria, Ichthyosauria, Plesiosauria, and Hupehsuchia. Ichthyosaurs appeared during the Early Triassic and persisted until the beginning of the Late Cretaceous.
Ichthyosaurs (Greek for "fish lizard" – ιχθυς or ichthys meaning "fish" and σαυρος or sauros meaning "lizard") are large extinct marine osaurs belong to the order known as Ichthyosauria or Ichthyopterygia ('fish flippers' – a designation introduced by Sir Richard Owen inalthough the term is now used more for the parent clade of the Ichthyosauria).Clade: †Eoichthyosauria.
New material of Phalarodon (reptilia: ichthyosauria) from the triassic of British Columbia and its bearing on the interrelationships of mixosaurs Article Full-text available. Ichthyosaurs (Greek for "fish lizard" - "ιχθυς" or "ichthys" meaning "fish" and "σαυρος" or "sauros" meaning "lizard") were giant marine reptiles that resembled dolphins in a textbook example of convergent osaurs thrived during much of the Mesozoic era; based on fossil evidence, they first appeared approximately million years ago and at least one species survived.
Ichthyosaurus has lent its name to an important family of marine reptiles, the ichthyosaurs, which descended from an as-yet-unidentified group of terrestrial reptiles that ventured into the water during the late Triassic period, about million years unately, not a whole lot is known about Ichthyosaurus compared to other "fish reptiles," since this genus is represented by.
The largest reported ichthyosaurs lived during the Late Triassic (~– million years ago), and isolated, fragmentary bones could be easily mistaken for those of dinosaurs because of their size.
We report the discovery of an isolated bone from the lower jaw of a giant ichthyosaur from the latest Triassic of Lilstock, Somerset, UK.
It documents that giant ichthyosaurs persisted well into Cited by: 3. Additional Physical Format: Online version: Merriam, John C. (John Campbell), Triassic ichthyosauria. Geographic and stratigraphic distribution of the Triassic Ichthyosauria (Reptilia, Diapsida).Cited by: 5. Ichthyosaurs are an extinct order of marine reptiles from the Mesozoic era.
By the Upper Triassic they are similar in shape to dolphins and to fast predatory fish like tuna (convergent evolution). They are found in marine strata from the earliest Triassic to the Cretaceous, though the early proto-ichthyosaurs are sometimes put in the broader category of : Reptilia.
Body shape and mode of swimming were major factors that affected the swimming capabilities of Mesozoic marine reptiles. By estimating the total drag and the amount of energy available through metabolism, the maximum sustained swimming Cited by: The Ichthyosauriformes probably split off in the Early Triassic, about million years ago; the last known forms lived in the middle Cretaceous.
A basal ichthyosauriform is Cartorhynchus ; more derived species are part of the Ichthyopterygia which again include the : †Ichthyosauromorpha. The Triassic (/ t r aɪ ˈ æ s. ɪ k / try-ASS-ik) is a geologic period and system which spans million years from the end of the Permian Period million years ago (), to the beginning of the Jurassic Period Mya.
The Triassic is the first and shortest period of the Mesozoic the start and end of the period are marked by major extinction atmospheric CO content over period duration:. Ichthyosaurus (derived from Greek ἰχθύς (ichthys) meaning 'fish' and σαῦρος (sauros) meaning 'lizard') is a genus of ichthyosaurs from the late Triassic and early Jurassic (Rhaetian - Pliensbachian) of Europe (Belgium, England, Germany, Switzerland) and Asia ().It is among the best known ichthyosaur genera, as it is the type genus of the order : Reptilia.

While dinosaurs ruled the land, the ichthyosaurs, classified variously in the Ichthyosauria or in the Ichthyopterygia, shared the seas of the world with the other great groups of large marine reptiles, the plesiosaurs and mosasaurs.
Ichthyosaurs were a type of large carnivorous marine reptile that closely resembled modern day dolphins and sharks which is called convergent evolution.
Ichthyosaurs thrived from the middle Triassic Period to the late Cretaceous Period. Ichthyosaurs include the largest marine reptiles known to date. There have been Ichthyosaur fossils recorded at 21 to 23 meters.

Ichthyopterygia ("fish flippers") was a designation introduced by Sir Richard Owen in to designate the Jurassic Ichthyosaurs that were known at the time, but the term is now used more often for both true Ichthyosauria and their more primitive early and middle Triassic ancestors (MotaniMotani et al.Motani b).
